Dorkdom started early for me. My dad bought our first Mac IIs computer and it was by far, the best purchase we ever made. Still even better than the car. It was Daddy’s computer until I was about 8 or 10 when he got his new Apple G4 (which he still has. We’re trying to persuade him to get the cheese grater instead) and then it ended up in my room. You can’t imagine the joy I had; I could write my Barbie stories on Quark Xpress, play Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, and of course learn on Mavis Beacon.

I remember my parents encouraging us to use Mavis Beacon everyday. I was angry because I couldn’t do it as quickly as my brother could and I ended up repeating stages over and over again. I credit that to my 120+ WPM today. I rocked Mavis Beacon’s racing game (its’ the one with cloud words scrolling across as you jam to some midi music). I was pretty sad when we gave the computer away and my Mavis Beacon days were over.

I miss you Mavis Beacon lady

Fast forward to 2009, a splendid year. First comes Typing Racer. I have to say, my boss got pretty mad after he played and he refused to try ever again. You type against other people for typing supremacy. I had to play a few races in order to be matched up with my boss. If you type pretty fast, they make you take a test to make sure you’re not a crazy bot. Great for interoffice competitions.

Then, there was Typing Maniac on Facebook. This game gave me some serious carpal tunnel syndrome for a week after I reached 2 million. Unfortunately I am second out of all my friends but I think I take healthy wrists over old woman wrists for now. You type words as they come down from the sky; you get penalized if they fall on the floor. For a boost, you get keywords that allow you to freeze the words, burn all the words in mid air, etc. It gets progressively crazier as time goes on. I wish they had a pause on this game because sometimes you just have to use the bathroom in the middle of the round and you’re out of luck.

The moral of the story is this: please get away from your silly one finger typing (though it can be quick, not as quick as getting your digits on the home rows and going from there). Secondly, come challenge me for typing challenges!
